The purpose of tree tests is to validate a hypothesis for a new IA. It typically builds on competitor research (looking at their IA's), card sorting, and general user feedback from other sources.

* A tree
* Tasks
The results can come in the form of success rate and how long it took until the person found the information they were looking for.
Tasks can be of several kinds:
*
Tasks should avoid the following issues:
* Giving away the answer by using the exact label term
* Long and packed descriptions that might side-track participants
